The Black and Minority Ethnic Residentsí Group (BMER) was formed in June 1995. Their aim is to increase the participation of ethnic minority communities on committees and community organisations in the local area. The Multi-Cultural History Week is the first big event to be organised by BMER who are hoping it will become an annual event.

Aims and Objectives

BMERs main objective in hosting the Multi Cultural History Week is to harmonise and educate the various ethnic groups with the history of their culture and how, when and why they settled in the United Kingdom, particularly in and around North Kensington.

The intention is to evaluate and inform people about how the richness and diversity in culture has encouraged understanding and unity amongst the community. These qualities have acted as a magnet to attract more ethnic groups into the North Kensington area.

The Multi Cultural History Week coincides with the 50th year celebrations of ëThe Windrushí which Trevor Phillips, presenter of ëThe London Programmeí, will be giving a presentation on. The Windrush was one of the first boats that brought Afro Caribbeans to England in the 1950ís and itís golden anniversary is a great opportunity to focus the History Week upon this section of the community.
